This film is not your ordinary under-dog contender because when you're an aspiring film-maker like myself, the story behind a film like this truly tells a captivating narrative that surely inspires many to strive well in this film industry. Not only was the film nominated for Best Picture but it also scored nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Director. This film is surely a motivation for young and upcoming film artists like myself because it shows that no matter how small your budget is, or how well-known you are in the industry, long as you put your all in to what you love and it shows, there's a high chance that people will recognize your story, which is what happened for Benh Zeitlin's directorial debut.
Additionally, a lot of Oscar buzz has been around the film's special stand-out talent, Quvenzhane Wallis, whom was only six years old during the production of the film, and being nominated as the youngest best actress nominee in American cinema history, only at age nine.
In this video featurette, nearly the entire crew praised the strong and courageous debut performance of the child actor. As stated in the above commentary, Director. Benh Zeitlin believed that he could have never found someone quite like Quvenzhane out of the five-hundred girls that attended the casting, which he thought she was truly the one to portray the ambitious and special role of Hush-puppy. The young actress has definitely made history in this year's Oscar race which is another reason why this film is so inspirational for debut artists in the art of cinema.
According to writer, Sean O'Connell from Cinema Blend.com, in the movie news article "For Your Consideration: Beasts of The Southern Wild Is The Mystical Elixir Oscar Desperately Needs", he believes that this film has a good chance at actually winning the Best Picture award, even though the chance may seem slim because of the history of the Oscars, but with this film's multiple nominations, the academy could be in favor of letting "Beasts of the Southern Wild" become this year's best picture win.
As a young and aspiring film-maker, when I saw this film, I knew people would be praising the authenticity and brilliance of the film's overall portrayal of the beautiful screenplay narrative by writer, Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin, but it made me even more proud when the members of the Academy gave it the recognition it highly deserved which inspires me each and every day to be the very best I can be in the film industry.
